The Immigrant Health Equity and Legal Partnerships (ImmHELP) is excited to offer a 1-hour virtual workshop for California health care providers across disciplines focused on information and strategies to advance care and coordination for immigrant patients, particularly asylum seekers. Presenters will provide a brief overview of current immigration policies and trends and then explore the relationship between such policies and patients’ health and health care. Next, presenters will discuss best practices for communicating with attorneys to support the well-being of immigrant patients who are in immigration-related legal proceedings. There will be time for participants to discuss and apply these strategies, and a tip sheet will also be provided as a resource.

Mental health evaluations often serve as critical evidence in an individual’s asylum case. This virtual workshop will explore scenarios where mental health evaluators’ credentials or expertise may be challenged in immigration court proceedings, including non-doctoral evaluators and non-psychiatrists performing physical and psychological evaluations. Panelists include a licensed clinical social worker, internal medicine physician, and psychiatrist and three attorneys, including a former asylum officer and former immigration judge, who will draw upon their experiences to share best practices in navigating these challenges. This workshop is suitable for both mental health evaluators and legal advocates.
